Day 3: North to Alaska
June 14, 2008 - Colorado Springs, CO to
Cody, WY
Left Gary, Lupe and the kids at around 9AM, a really late start. Hit I-25 North and blasted up to Wyoming. Just before the state line the wind really picked up again. 30-35mph out of the west. Joy. :( Absolutely killed gas mileage, between Cheyenne and Casper I got 33 MPG.
Got off the interstate at Casper and headed west toward Boysen reservoir, Wind River Canyon and Thermopolis. Also stopped at Hell's Half Acre, a small badlands type formation. Odd how there's just that little patch of it. Wind River canyon was a real highlight, very pretty. Had no idea it was going to be like that.
At Thermopolis, I took WY 120 up to Cody. This was a fabulous stretch, the space and light and clouds and mountains were just perfect. Wish I'd had more time, would have liked to have taken a bunch more pictures.
Cody's very much a tourist town, so I grabbed a very overpriced room, got a burger and a beer for dinner, typed this up and headed for bed.
Gotta really make tracks tomorrow. Mileage for today was 570.
