Day 19: North to Alaska
June 30, 2008 - Hyder, AK to Prince George
Spent some time in the morning riding up to the Salmon Glacier, above Hyder. 20 miles of dirt road each way, but worth it. The road climbs up the mountainside above the glacier, so you're looking down on it. Not a view you normally get.
After that headed out the spur to the Cassier. Saw another bear, right before the junction and an eagle shortly after.
Couple things I forgot to mention yesterday. Saw a Smart Car on the Cassier!! What the hell!! :) It was on the most remote stretches too, between Dease Lake and the Alcan. No gas for 160 miles. Don't think I've ever seen anything look so completely out of place.
Also, remember those 3 guys I kept running into? Happened again, passed them on the spur into Stewart they were coming out as I was heading in.
The lower portion of the Cassier is a bit dull, trees right up on the road on both sides, not much to see. Things improved after heading east on 16, lots of mountains at first and then it flattened out a little into rolling hills with a lot of farm and ranch land mixed in with forest. Relaxing stretch of road. Got hot, surprisingly, 90 degrees according to one sign.
